- Nothing is scheduled until the medical leader has reviewed your imaging reports and history, so the answer can be no before you fly.
- The hotel, consulting rooms and treatment areas are in one building, and even a combined case takes about two hours.
- Expect three to five sore days, stay at least two days after the application, and take no anti-inflammatories afterwards.
Most pages about medical travel to Medellín are really about Medellín — the weather, the food, the view from El Poblado.
This one is about the week. What decides whether your trip goes well is not the restaurants. It is what your body is doing on day three, and whether anyone warned you about it.
Before you book the flight
Nothing is scheduled until our medical leader has reviewed your case. That means the written reports from your imaging — not the images themselves — plus your clinical history, and for spinal cases a pain questionnaire we send you in advance.
This step exists so that the answer can be no. Sometimes the imaging shows damage past the point where cells are the right tool, and it is far better to learn that from home than after a flight. If your studies are out of date, imaging can be arranged here through partner centres before the procedure.
You also choose your laboratory before arriving. Both options are GMP-certified: one here in Medellín, one in Bogotá that flies the cells in and applies them within three hours. The Medellín option thaws, washes out the cryoprotectants, resuspends and re-counts the cells before delivery, which costs more. You are told the difference and you decide.
The week itself
Logistics are deliberately short. The hotel, the consulting rooms and the treatment areas are in the same building — consulting rooms on the lobby floor, operating and IV rooms one floor up. Airport transfers both ways and hotel nights for your treatment days are part of the programme, along with bilingual patient care.
A typical week opens with consultation and preparation, including a blood detox IV. Then the application itself, in the operating room at our treatment center: spinal procedures under sedation guided by fluoroscopy, peripheral joints under ultrasound with local anaesthesia. Even a combined case — spine, both knees, an elbow — takes about two hours.
Before anything is applied you receive the certificate of analysis for your own batch and vials, with the release testing behind it: viability, cell identity by flow cytometry, karyotype, sterility, mycoplasma and endotoxins.
The uncomfortable parts
Now the part that belongs on this page and rarely appears anywhere else.
The first day after is the hardest, and it is total rest. Expect three to five days of being sore, swollen and limping. Plan a minimum of two days in Colombia after the application before flying, and ask for a wheelchair at the airport — people are often surprised by how much they want one. Some patients are still uncomfortable at ten days. We do not promise how fast the swelling settles, because it varies and we cannot control it.
If several joints are treated at once you may go home with a three-day elastomeric pain pump, removed here before your flight.
One rule matters more than the rest: no anti-inflammatory drugs afterwards, and no stacking other treatments on top. Only what the treating physician prescribes. The cells are left to work on their own.
After you fly home
Then you go home and wait, which is its own kind of work. Improvement is generally described between four and six months, sometimes closer to eight. Follow-up consultations are with our sports medicine physician, and a control scan around six months can be done here or in your own country. Physiotherapy runs through a partner, in person or online — we do not run a rehabilitation programme ourselves, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.
A good treatment week is mostly unglamorous: an honest assessment, a short procedure, and several quiet days of recovery with someone nearby who speaks your language. If a page promises you more excitement than that, it is selling you the city, not the treatment.
- Send your written imaging reports and history first. Book the flight only after the medical review.
- Plan at least two days in Colombia after the application, and ask for a wheelchair at the airport.
- Take only what the treating physician prescribes, with no anti-inflammatories, and expect to wait four to six months.
